One of the reasons I chose to evangelize about sales careers when I retired is the wonderful life a career in sales gave me. When I was at the lowest point of my life, a new sales job allowed me to rebuild my life, and go on to help others.
A job in sales is the one job that you can land, even if a company isn’t hiring! It’s also a career where you can actually go out and create your own sales job and then ‘sell’ it to the company of your choosing. I know what I speak of, I did both of these things during my career.
There is a national movement called Reentry 2030 which is a national initiative that aims to dramatically improve reentry success for people exiting prison and those under supervision. They are not focused on sales careers…but could be!
Starting a new career after serving time in prison can be challenging. However, a career in sales offers several unique advantages that make it an excellent choice for those looking to rebuild their lives and establish a successful future.
Attainability – This is important! Sales careers are the most equitable jobs out there…why? Because there is no barrier to entry. No experience is required and there are no education requirements.
So often those who were incarcerated have to settle for an entry-level job once they attempt to reenter the workforce. I read an article that stated, When looking for a job as a felon, it’s best to start with entry-level jobs and work your way up from there. It doesn’t have to be that way!
The sales industry can be more open to giving second chances, and valuing performance and results over past mistakes.
The story of someone who has been incarcerated might turn off a Hiring Manager, but someone who is in charge of revenue production (Sales Manager, Owner, Director of Sales) could be intrigued by someone’s story and their desire to rebuild their life selling that company’s product or service.
Financial Stability – A successful sales career can offer significant financial rewards. With the right skills and determination, you can achieve a stable and lucrative income, helping you to rebuild your life and secure a better future than in any other job!
Flexibility – Many sales roles offer flexibility in terms of hours and work environment, which can be beneficial for someone transitioning back into the workforce. Plus a great number of sales jobs today are virtual, which helps with transportation and daycare challenges.
Building a Network – Working in sales can help individuals build a professional network, which can be valuable for career growth and personal reintegration into society. Networking can also open doors to other opportunities within the industry. In my book I wrote about a family friend who sold men’s clothing. One of this customers was so impressed he hired him to work in his energy company. Dude was so successful he got to retire early.
Hope – Probably the most important aspect is the hope that a sales career can give someone who feels they will never outlive their past mistakes. It can give someone without hope the opportunity to feel great about themselves and the future they can give their family!
A sales job…a professional sales job, with a base salary and great earning potential…is the single best way for someone to rebuild their life!
On a larger level, organizations could create their own sales operation to be resellers for companies! Imagine an entire sales force motivated to change their lives and become examples to others that you are NOT defined by your mistakes!
I work with many experts that can also help someone enter a specific field such as Software sales, Roofing & Solar sales, Medical sales, Ag sales and even Manufacturing reps.
